Help My Unbelief

Hello:

I was studying this morning and was moved by this story.  It is found in the book of Mark.  I know we are suppose to be in the book of Matthew but somehow I was drawn to this particular story.

Mark 9:14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 ”What are you arguing with them about?” he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.” 19 ”O unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 ”It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 ”‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

The part of this story that touched my heart today was verses 23-24.   The father asks Jesus if you can do anything take pity and help.  Jesus repeated “if you can?” as if to question the man’s faith and then he goes on to say that “everything is possible for him who believes.”  The man stated to Jesus that he believes but help his unbelief. The man was asking Jesus to help him with his doubts.  The man indicated that he believed but it was not a perfect belief and that in the midst of him believing there was doubt that he was wrestling with.

Often times we find ourselves believing that God can do something but wrestling with doubts as to will God do it for us.  We may trust God for our eternal security but would we struggle with trusting him if we suddenly lost our jobs or wanting to open up our own business, or needed healing, etc.

We believe that God is able but we often doubt will God intervene on our behalf.    My prayer today is that God would help our unbelief.    Every area that we are weak in concerning our faith, let’s pray today that God helps any doubts we may have and that God would strengthen us through his word.

For Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Lord I believe, but help my unbelief.

God Bless!!!!

Don’t forget to pray and read God’s word daily.
