If You Were Willing
31. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello: Today we conclude the 23rd chapter of Matthew. Our text for today is as follows:
Matthew 23:34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. 37 ”O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Our text today flows out of yesterday’s story. We have been discussing the eight woes that Jesus pronounced upon the Pharisees. Today, Jesus describes the coming punishment that the Pharisees would see in their generation and at the same time he expresses how he longed to have gathered their children together as an hen gathers her chicks under her wings but they were not willing. This text is amazing to me because through all the rebuke that the Lord has issued towards the Pharisees He still expresses how he desired to be their Savior yet they were not willing.
This closes our chapter and tomorrow we begin Chapter 24. Again, we are studying the last week of the life of Jesus leading up to our Easter Sunday. I am amazed at how our study has coincided with the season of the church. This Sunday will be Psalm Sunday which we discussed on last week and then of course Easter. I’ll see you on tomorrow as we continue our journey of the things that Jesus did on his last week on earth.
Be encouraged! God Bless!!!!!!!

Woes Continued
30. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Our text is as follows:
Matthew 23:23 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices–mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law–justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. 29 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! 33 ”You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?
On last Friday, we we talked about how this chapter opens up with a series of rebukes that are directed to the Pharisees. Jesus called them hypocrites and then began to specifically identify some of their hypocritical actions. We talked about how there are eight woes to the Pharisees. We dealt with four of them on Friday (though they were combined as two) and today we will deal with the other four
Woe #5- You give a tenth of everything even down to the spices, yet you neglect the more important matters of the law which are justice, mercy and faithfulness. Jesus instructed them that they should not ignore the tithe but practice the other items also.
Woe #6- You clean the outside of the cup but the inside is filled with greed and self-indulgence. If you clean the inside, the outside will automatically be clean. Jesus was speaking to the heart. If our hearts are clean then our natural appearance will take care of itself but to focus on our outward appearance without working on the heart still leaves the inside corrupt.
Woe #7 – You are like whitewashed tombs that on the outside are beautiful but on the inside are filled with dead men’s bones. Jesus was telling the Pharisees that you appear to men as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
Woe #8- You build tombs for the prophets and for the righteous and testify that if you had lived during their days you would not have taken part in shedding their innocent blood yet you yourself are doing the same thing.
Let me just remind you of our context. We are on the last week of Jesus and the things that he did before he would go to the cross. As you see from our study, Jesus makes sure that during this last week, he sets the religious leaders of the day straight for once and for all.

Woes
27. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Our text is as follows:
Matthew 23:13 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 15 ”Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. 16 ”Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. (NIV)
Yesterday, we talked about how this chapter opens up with a series of rebukes that are directed to the Pharisees. Jesus called them hypocrites and then began to specifically identify some of their hypocritical actions. The ones we dealt with on yesterday had to do with their pride and arrogance and their need to be seen and feel important. Today we will deal with their conversion efforts and their position concerning oaths and swearing. You’ll notice that our text opens up with Woe to you. As a matter of fact there are eight woes issue to the Pharisees. He calls them hypocrites (speaking to their character) and blind men (speaking to their leadership). Today we will deal with two of the eight woes.
Woe #1- You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. This particular woe had to do with their false teachings. Because the Pharisees taught the traditions of men over the word of God they did not accurately teach the way of salvation therefore causing their followers to miss out on the kingdom of God and raising up converts who continued to teach their erroneous doctrines or as Jesus puts it makes them “twice the son of hell than they are.”.
Woe #2- Swearing and oaths. Those of you who have been following this teaching know that when we covered the “Sermon on the Mount” in chapter 5 we did a detail study on swearing and oaths and its historical context in the life of the Jews. I will not review today but should you be new to the site all the old lessons are in archives and you can go back and review that history on oaths and swearing. It is really quite interesting. In our text today, Jesus is simply repeating something that he had corrected earlier in his sermon on the mount. This is the second woe.
Well, everyone, I really do want you to have a great weekend. Don’t forget to check out the “pink blooms.” They’re still around.
I have not said it in a while but I really do want to thank all of you that log in daily to study the book of Matthew with me. The Pharisees
26. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Today we start a new chapter. For those of you who have been with us from the beginning then this month is our one year anniversary of studying the book of Matthew. Lady Crystal brought that to my attention. We should be finished in a few weeks and I will be revealing our next study. I think you’re going to be excited. I’m already excited about my preparation for it.
Our text is as follows:
Matthew 23:1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 ”The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 ”Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ 8 ”But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
This chapter opens up with a series of rebukes that are directed to the Pharisees. First Jesus addresses the crowd and his disciples. He tells them that the teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses seat so you must obey them and do everything that tell you. Jesus was telling them that they are the teachers of the law and they are in charge of teaching the Law of Moses. In other words, the word of God that they teach is to be obeyed but then he warns them about their actions. He tells them to obey the teachings of Moses but do not mimic the actions of the Pharisees for they are hypocrites. They do not practice what they preach.
Jesus goes on to get specific about their hypocrisy.
(1) They tie up heavy loads and put them upon men’s shoulders and do not lift a finger to move them. The Pharisees started out as a zealous people for the things of God. They wanted with all their hearts to please God yet somewhere down the road their attempts to cause the people to obey God’s word became bondage. There were 613 laws that existed in the Torah (first five books of the bible) or Law of Moses. The Pharisees taught these laws with bondage demanding that the people keep them when they themselves were not obeying them yet making the people believe that they were. Jesus came with the gospel of freedom. Through Jesus, God creates a love in our hearts for God and our fellow man so that naturally through love we have a desire to do the right thing. Rules without relationship ultimately lead to bondage.
(2) They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; They did this to appear to be more religious than they actually were. Phylacteries comes from Tefillin, (Hebrew: תפילין), also called phylacteries, are a pair of black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with bible verses. The hand-tefillin, or shel yad, is worn by Jews wrapped around the arm, hand and fingers, while the head-tefillin, or shel rosh, is placed above the forehead. They serve as a “sign” and “remembrance” that God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt and serve several purposes in the fulfilment of the scriptual commandments proscribing them to be worn by Jews. (Source: Wikepedia)
(3) They loved to sit at the seat of honor at a banquet and the most important seats in the synagogues.
(4) They loved to be called out and noticed at the market place and have men call them Rabbi.
Jesus says that they are hypocrites and goes on to say call no man Father for our Father is in heaven and call no man teacher for our teacher is Christ. Jesus was not saying that these titles could not be used but that we were not to exalt any person over God or their teachings over the teachings of Christ.
This text closes with Jesus giving us the definition of a true servant. The greatest among you will be your servant and whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Greatness is serving. A person that is truly greats seeks to serve and not to be served.

Whose Son?
25. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Today we end the 22nd chapter of Matthew.
Our text is as follows:
Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 ”What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 ”‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’” 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Yesterday our text ended the political, theological, and spiritual testing of Jesus by the Pharisees and Sadducees. All their attempts to trap him failed and today the text opens with Jesus asking a question. Since the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them; “What do you think about the Christ? “Whose son is he?” Instantly they replied that he was the son of David.
Jesus then says to them if he is the “son of David” then why when David referred to him speaking by the Spirit called him Lord? Jesus then goes on to quote the scripture in Psalms that David makes this statement. Jesus says if David calls him Lord, then how can he be his son? The text says that no one said a word in reply and they dared not to ask him any more questions from that moment on.
Our lessons have taught us that Jesus was always able to give them an answer to their questions and even amazed them with his scholarship and authority but the one question that Jesus asked of them, they could not answer.

The Greatest Commandment
24. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Our text for today is as follows:
Matthew 22:34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 ”Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Our text today flows out of yesterday’s story. The statement “hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees” refers to the incident in yesterday’s text when Jesus silenced the Sadducees concerning the question on the resurrection. After the Pharisees saw the failed attempt of the Sadducees, they came with their own test by sending an expert of the law to ask Jesus what was the greatest commandment in the Law?
Jesus responded that it was to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and the second is similar to it which is love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said that all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.
The Hebrew bible which is called the TANAK was divided into three sections; the law, the prophets and the writings. When you see the term “book of Moses” or “law of Moses” in the New Testament, it refers to the first five books of the bible. To the Hebrews, the most authoritative scripture was first the law and then the prophets. So when Jesus makes the statement that all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments, it refers to that body of literature contained in the first five books of the bible and the writings of the prophets.
What was the test? Moses was considered the authority of the law. God chose Moses out of all the men of the earth to give his law to so Moses was highly admired. The Jews thought that they could trap Jesus by getting him to go against the Law of Moses or teach something different. We know that when we were studying the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus stated that he came not to tear down the law but to fulfill.
Jesus did the exact opposite of what the Pharisees thought. He quoted directly from Moses in answering the question. Not only did he quote from the Law of Moses but he quoted the most familiar passage of scriptures known to the Jews which was the Shema.
Once again, Jesus strategically amazed them with his response. Tomorrow, we will continue our study. Mark’s account of this story teaches us that from this point on, they did not test Jesus further. He brilliantly silenced them.
Be encouraged!

Whose Wife Is She?
23. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Our text for today is as follows.
Matthew 22:23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 ”Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” 29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead–have you not read what God said to you, 32 ’I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
Okay, let’s reflect. We’re still on the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. He has recently told three parables to the religious leaders about how the kingdom was going to be taken from them and given to another and how for their unfruitfulness they will be sentenced to a place where there will be “weeping and gnashing” of teeth. The religious leaders were very upset and though Jesus taught in parables, they knew he was speaking about them. From this juncture they tried to trap him in his words concerning a series of issues. The first one we studied last week was about the inscription on the coin.
Today, they tried to trap him on a theological issue concerning the resurrection. I simply love the way that Jesus handles them. These were supposed to be teachers of the law and Jesus tells them that they do not know the scriptures or the power of God. The issue was concerning the resurrection. The Pharisees and Sadducees were divided in their views concerning the resurrection. The Pharisees believed in the resurrection and the Sadducees did not.
The issue was that since Moses commanded that if a man dies without children then the brother of that man is to marry the widow and raise up children for his brother and if that brother dies and another still lives then the tradition continues. The particular situation that they present to Jesus has seven brothers dieing and all married the same woman so they want to know whose wife she will be in the resurrection.
Remember, the Sadducees didn’t even believe in the resurrection. The whole thing was a setup to expose his theological views. Whoever he sided with would have stirred up confusion with the opposite party. Jesus was brilliant in his answer. He first told them that there would not be marrying at the resurrection, we will be like the angels and then he said that have you not read or in other words, you should know this since you are the holders of the law. The common people could not read the law. They did not have bibles in the hands of the everyday people as we do today. Did you not read in your studying that God said that “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but the living. The crowds were astonished when they heard his teachings.

Pink Bloom
20. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello Everyone:
For those of you that are new to my daily devotional, I would like to let you know that whenever I get touched or ministered to by a scripture or an event then I break away from my study to share it with you. So today is one of those days.
I go to this chapel every morning at 6:00a.m. to pray and afterwards I work out in the gym. On this particular property that I go to where both the chapel and gym are there is a lake. Today, after working out I walked down to this lake and I sat on an old beach under a tree which gave me the perfect view of the lake.
The lake was surronded by trees that were brown and looked dull and dried from the winter and had no signs of life on them. The first time I glanced at the scenery, I was just in awe of the beauty of the place even though things did not look as beautiful as it does in the spring. I took a second look around and it’s as if it appeared out of no where but it was a pink bloom. Just a bloom everybody. It was the most beautiful thing. It was right there in the midst of everything that looked lifeless. A pink bloom.
A pink bloom is so suttle that if you aren’t careful, you’ll miss it. So often we are fascinanted with the completed work and what the thing has grown into and the finished product but the bloom is a sign that God is at work even though it has not fully matured into its beauty.
The pink bloom. It took my breath away. Is anybody really just noticing God’s handywork. It’s beautiful. The pink bloom is rarely noticed but it blossoms into a breathtaking masterpiece that only a God can create. Have you ever felt like a pink bloom. Nobody really notices you and you’re often among things that appear to be dead and unproductive but God is working on you and developing you into a masterpiece, but the bloom is a sign that God is at work.
Just look around you,……. Spring is near……. It’s a pink bloom yall…….
Breathtaking…………………..
Have a great weekend.
Don’t forget to pray and read God’s word daily.

Whose Inscription?
19. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Every now and then, I have a problem getting onto my site and posting and yesterday was one of those days, so No, I’m okay. All is well….. I know that that some of you get concerned when you don’t see my daily post.
Our text for today is as follows:
Matthew 22:15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” 21 ”Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
That gives us our context. In our text today, the Pharisees try to figure out a plan where they can trap him in his words. So they try to get Jesus to go against the laws of Caesar so he can be arrested. There hope was that since Jesus “claimed” to be sent from God then they thought that he would never adhere to honoring a “worldly” king and ruler so they tried to get him to speak against the current world system.
They start off with giving him compliments about how he is a man of God and he teaches the truth and he would not be swayed by men no matter who they are. This made me laugh when I read it. Ohhhh….. such a simply plan, I mean he is God and he does know their heart but to play devil’s advocate, they didn’t believe that he was sent from God. They really thought Jesus was a false prophet.
So the loaded question, intended to trap him was: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus immediately called them hypocrites and even asked them why they were trying to trap him. He said; “show me the coin.” Brillant………. Jesus then asked whose inscription is on it and they replied that it was Caesar and Jesus brilliantly said then given unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s. The bible said that they walked away amazed at his genius of an answer.
Okay, tomorrow we will continue our journey on the last week of Jesus.

The Wedding Banquet
17. March 2009 by Bernice Davis.
Hello:
Today, we are in the 22nd chapter today. MAKING PROGRESS!!!!Our text for today is as follows:
Matthew 22:1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 ”The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. 4 ”Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ 5 ”But they paid no attention and went off–one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 ”Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 ”But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 ’Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless. 13 ”Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 ”For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
Our chapter actually opens up with a continuation of the parables addressed to the religious leaders. Please remember that when the bible was originally written, chapters and verses were not included. It was one continuous scroll. Chapters and verses were added later for studying and organizational purposes. While we are in another chapter, we can see that is a continuation of the 21st chapter.
In this parable, Jesus compares the religious leaders to people who were invited to come to the wedding festival. The wedding festival represents salvation. In other words, salvation was first prepared for the Jews but they would not come to the festival because they refused to acknowledge and adhere or honor the king’s son. The king got made and invited others to come to the wedding and take their place since the event was a reality and there were no guests. These guests are the gentiles. Jesus is again telling the religious leaders that they would be kept out of the kingdom because of their unbelief and fruitlessness and others would take their place.
The last part of this parable is the guest that is not in proper attire. The text says that everyone comes to the wedding dressed yet he is not. I know they pulled everyone from the highways and byways but either dress was provided for them by the king or they had time to go home and change for the occasion. Whatever the situation, all we know is that in the text, this man came undressed, no respect for the rules, just going to crash the party, his own way. When comforted, he had no excuse so evidently he could have been dressed just refused.
