Whose Son?
Hello:
Today we end the 22nd chapter of Matthew.
Our text is as follows:
Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 ”What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 ”‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’” 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Yesterday our text ended the political, theological, and spiritual testing of Jesus by the Pharisees and Sadducees. All their attempts to trap him failed and today the text opens with Jesus asking a question. Since the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them; “What do you think about the Christ? “Whose son is he?” Instantly they replied that he was the son of David.
Jesus then says to them if he is the “son of David” then why when David referred to him speaking by the Spirit called him Lord? Jesus then goes on to quote the scripture in Psalms that David makes this statement. Jesus says if David calls him Lord, then how can he be his son? The text says that no one said a word in reply and they dared not to ask him any more questions from that moment on.
Our lessons have taught us that Jesus was always able to give them an answer to their questions and even amazed them with his scholarship and authority but the one question that Jesus asked of them, they could not answer.
Stay encouraged!!!!!!!!
Don’t forget to pray and read God’s word daily.
