Saul’s Response to David Sparing His Life

Hello:

Our text for today picks up with what Saul will say to David after he has found out that David had the opportunity to kill him but he did not.

Here is the story:

I Samuel 24:16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17 ”You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18 You have just now told me of the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.” 22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Our story is very interesting today.  As you can see from the text, Saul is feeling remorse and has realized that David is more righteous than him for having the opportunity to kill his enemby yet he did not.

You will also see in the text that Saul confesses to David that he is aware that he is suppose to be the next king of Israel and asks David to make a covenant with him that he will not cut off his descendants or wipe out his name from his father’s family.

David agrees.  He gives this oath to Saul despite how Saul has constantly tried to kill him.

Saul does return home but will this be the end of Saul’s hunt for David to destroy him so that the kingdom have stay in the hand of Saul.   What Saul does not realize is that you cannot “kill” the plan of God. David was destined to be Israel’s next king.   Saul would never be able to kill David because of God’s plan on his life.

We’ll continue our story on tomorrow, but is this act of kindness enough on David’s behalf or will Saul quickly forget this conversation and turn on David again.

We’ll see as we continue our journey to David’s rise to the monarchy.

God Bless you!!!!!!!!
